Assembly overview – front airbag, driver side
1 - Steering wheel
❏ → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.48; Steering wheel; Removing and installing steering wheel
2 - Airbag unit
❏ With driver side airbag igniter -N95-.
❏ → Rep. gr.69; Removing and installing airbag unit with airbag igniter on driver side [N95]
3 - Wire
❏ → Rep. gr.69; Renewing connector on airbag
Removing and installing airbag unit with igniter
Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ release tool -T10610-
Airbag unit with airbag igniter on driver side -N95- is referred to hereafter as airbag unit.
Removing
– Deactivate vehicle’s drive system.
– Turn steering wheel 90° from straight-ahead position.
– Insert release tool -T10610- -1- as far as stop into opening for locking bracket -2-.
– Pull release tool -T10610- -1- in direction of -arrow- and release locking bracket -2-.
– Turn steering wheel 180°.
– Repeat release procedure.
– Apply light pressure onto airbag unit in order to relieve tension from locking bracket.
– Bring steering wheel to straight-ahead position.
– Disconnect battery earth cable → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27; Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery.
CAUTION
It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.
Risk of injury
– Discharge static electricity by briefly touching door striker plate.
– Detach airbag unit -3- to gain access to electrical connector -1-.
– Pull out connector lock -2- in direction of -arrow-, press it down, and disconnect electrical connector -1-.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.
Risk of injury
– Discharge static electricity by briefly touching door striker plate.
– Fit electrical connector, and push it in until it audibly engages.
– Secure electrical connector on backside of airbag unit.
– Make sure that no wires are trapped.
– Bring steering wheel to straight-ahead position.
– Position airbag unit -1- in steering wheel and press on edge with both hands simultaneously until it audibly engages.
– Connect battery earth cable → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27; Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery.
CAUTION
It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.
Risk of injury.
– Stay as far back as possible from pyrotechnic components when switching on the ignition.
– Switch on ignition.
– Read and clear event memory using → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
Renewing connector on airbag
Removing
The airbag unit with airbag igniter on driver side -N95- will henceforth be referred to as “airbag unit with igniter”.
– Remove airbag unit with igniter → Rep. gr.69; Removing and installing airbag unit with airbag igniter on driver side [N95].
CAUTION
It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.
Risk of injury
– Discharge static electricity by briefly touching door striker plate.
– Unhook electrical wire -1- from retainers on airbag -2-.
– Release connector lock -2- in direction of -arrow-.
– Disconnect electrical connector -1-.
– Detach electrical wire.
Installing
CAUTION
It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.
Risk of injury
– Discharge static electricity by briefly touching door striker plate.
– Connect electrical connector -1- for airbag unit with igniter in direction of -arrow A-.
– Press in connector lock -2- in direction of -arrow B-.
Continue installation in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
– Connect electrical connectors until they engage audibly.
